How to install Minecraft OptiFine & BSL Shader

2026 Updated Notice
This post was originally written for an older Minecraft Java Edition version and explains how to install OptiFine and the BSL shader pack. The general process is still useful, but Minecraft versions, Java requirements, shader menus, and mod compatibility may change over time.

  • Minecraft now uses a newer year-based version numbering system, so old 1.x examples may not match the latest launcher version.
  • OptiFine support may arrive later than the latest Minecraft release.
  • Always download OptiFine for the exact Minecraft version you want to play.
  • If OptiFine is not available for your version, consider using Iris + Sodium as a shader alternative.
  • Only download OptiFine, Iris, Sodium, and shader packs from trusted official pages.

Minecraft Java Edition can be customized with many mods and visual upgrades.

OptiFine is one of the most well-known Minecraft mods because it can improve performance, add more video settings, support HD texture packs, and enable shader packs.

In this guide, I will show you how to install OptiFine and apply BSL Shaders as an example.

If your Minecraft version is too new and OptiFine is not available yet, I also added an Iris + Sodium alternative section near the end.

0. Before You Start

Before installing OptiFine or any shader pack, check the following items first.

Item What to Check
Minecraft Version OptiFine must match the exact Minecraft version you want to play.
Java You need Java to run the OptiFine .jar installer.
OptiFine Support Some new Minecraft versions may not have stable OptiFine support yet.
Shader Pack Shader packs are usually downloaded as .zip files and placed in the shaderpacks folder.
Performance Shaders can reduce FPS, especially on low-end PCs or laptops with integrated graphics.

1. Choose the Minecraft Version First

This is one of the most important steps.

OptiFine is version-specific, so you need to know exactly which Minecraft version you want to use.

For example, if you want to install OptiFine for Minecraft 1.20.1, you should first run Minecraft 1.20.1 at least once from the Minecraft Launcher.

The basic flow is:

  1. Open Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Select the Minecraft version you want to use.
  3. Launch the game once.
  4. Close the game.
  5. Install the matching OptiFine version.
Important:
Do not install a random OptiFine version. Minecraft, OptiFine, Forge, and shader-related mods must match the version you are actually playing.

2. Install or Check Java

OptiFine is downloaded as a .jar file.

To run a .jar file, Java must be installed on your computer.

You can download Java from the official Java page:

https://www.java.com/en/download/

You can also check whether Java is already installed by opening Command Prompt and typing:

java -version

If Java is installed correctly, you should see version information in the command window.

If nothing appears or an error message is shown, install Java first and then try opening the OptiFine .jar file again.

3. Download OptiFine

Go to the official OptiFine download page:

https://optifine.net/downloads

Find the OptiFine version that matches your Minecraft version.

If your version is not shown at the top, click Show all versions and look for the correct one.

OptiFine downloads may show both stable and preview versions.

  • Stable version: Better for normal users.
  • Preview version: May support newer Minecraft versions but can have bugs.
Download Safety:
Download OptiFine only from the official OptiFine website. Avoid fake download buttons, unknown mirror sites, and executable files that are not part of the official OptiFine download process.

4. Install OptiFine

Once the OptiFine .jar file has been downloaded, double-click the file.

The OptiFine Installer window should appear.

Click Install.

When the installation is finished, open Minecraft Launcher again.

You should see an OptiFine profile in the profile dropdown.

If double-clicking the .jar file does not work, try running it from Command Prompt:

java -jar OptiFine_Installer_File_Name.jar

Replace OptiFine_Installer_File_Name.jar with the actual file name you downloaded.

5. Download BSL Shaders

In this guide, I will use BSL Shaders as an example.

Official BSL Shaders page:

https://capttatsu.com/bslshaders/

You can also find BSL Shaders on CurseForge or Modrinth:

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/shaders/bsl-shaders

https://modrinth.com/shader/bsl-shaders

Download the shader pack as a .zip file.

Important:
Usually, you do not need to unzip the shader pack. Keep the downloaded BSL Shaders file as a .zip file and place it directly into the shaderpacks folder.

6. Launch Minecraft with the OptiFine Profile

Open Minecraft Launcher and select the OptiFine profile.

Then launch the game.

From the main menu, go to:

Options → Video Settings → Shaders

7. Open the Shaders Folder

Click Shaders Folder.

This will open the folder where Minecraft looks for shader pack files.

On Windows, the shaderpacks folder is usually located here:

%appdata%\.minecraft\shaderpacks

Place the downloaded BSL Shaders .zip file into this folder.

8. Apply BSL Shaders

Go back to the Minecraft Shaders menu.

You should now see the BSL shader pack in the list.

Click the BSL Shaders .zip file to select it.

If everything is working correctly, BSL Shaders should be applied to your game.

9. If OptiFine Is Not Available: Try Iris + Sodium

OptiFine is very popular, but it does not always support the newest Minecraft version immediately.

If you are using a newer Minecraft version and OptiFine is not ready yet, you can use Iris + Sodium instead.

Iris adds shader support, and Sodium improves performance.

The Iris installer can automatically download and install both Iris and Sodium, which makes it easier for new users.

Official Iris download page:

https://www.irisshaders.dev/download/

I also have a separate guide here:

OptiFine not supported? Try Iris + Sodium

Option Best For Notes
OptiFine Older or supported Minecraft versions Easy standalone installer and classic shader workflow.
Iris + Sodium Newer Minecraft versions and better performance Good alternative when OptiFine support is delayed.

10. Common Problems and Fixes

10-1. The OptiFine .jar file does not open

This usually means Java is not installed correctly or .jar files are not associated with Java.

Try checking Java with:

java -version

If Java is installed, try running the installer manually:

java -jar OptiFine_Installer_File_Name.jar

10-2. The OptiFine profile does not appear in Minecraft Launcher

Close Minecraft Launcher completely and open it again.

If the profile still does not appear, make sure you ran the target Minecraft version once before installing OptiFine.

10-3. The Shaders menu is missing

Make sure you launched Minecraft with the OptiFine profile.

If you launched the normal Minecraft profile, the shader menu may not appear.

10-4. BSL Shaders does not appear in the list

Check the following:

  • The file is still a .zip file.
  • The .zip file is inside the shaderpacks folder.
  • You did not place the file inside the resourcepacks folder by mistake.
  • The downloaded file is the actual shader pack and not a webpage or installer file.

10-5. FPS is too low after applying shaders

Shaders can be heavy.

Try lowering these settings:

  • Render Distance
  • Shadow Quality
  • Clouds
  • Anti-aliasing
  • Shader quality preset

If your PC still struggles, try Iris + Sodium or use a lighter shader pack.

11. Safety Tips

  • Download OptiFine only from optifine.net.
  • Download BSL Shaders from the official page, CurseForge, or Modrinth.
  • Do not run random .exe files that claim to install Minecraft shaders.
  • Keep your Minecraft version, OptiFine version, and shader pack compatibility in mind.
  • Back up your Minecraft folder if you are testing many mods and versions.

Conclusion

Installing OptiFine and BSL Shaders is not too difficult once you understand the basic flow.

  1. Choose your Minecraft version.
  2. Run that version once in Minecraft Launcher.
  3. Install Java if needed.
  4. Download the matching OptiFine version.
  5. Install OptiFine.
  6. Download BSL Shaders as a .zip file.
  7. Open the Shaders Folder from Minecraft.
  8. Place the BSL .zip file into the shaderpacks folder.
  9. Select BSL Shaders in the game.

If OptiFine does not support your Minecraft version yet, Iris + Sodium is a good alternative for shader support and performance.
